1880's STEAM FIRE ENGINE

This will be the first in a series of antique fire equipment builds I have planned. Tribute to my DAD Archie Perkins, who was a life member of Hose #1 in Homer, N.Y. and ALL THE FIRE FIGHTERS OUT THERE. I don’t paint many of my builds but this just had to be Fire Engine Red and trimmed in Gold, the eloquent way that they did things in the late 1800’s. Built from a 4×4x12” Ash bolt almost entirely. A few poplar dowels, and some hard wood scraps needed for fine details. The boiler was first and 3 were turned before I got what was in my head, pictures were plenty, but any sizing had to be from dead reckoning, internet didn’t help much here. The drive piston turns the crank [ I made several]that turns the pump rods into the pump cylinders by hand turning the flywheel. [toughest part of the build] The fire box door opens and closes. The gauges are made from filling brass eye’s with white paint and sanding smooth. Only other metal is the bent wire used for the front seat and the boiler tags that I applied. All my skills were used in this engine, turning, painting, hand building and lots of carving. I learned a lot of how these engines and steam in general was used back then, a fun build.
Next will be a hose wagon and then a ladder wagon. These take a LONG time so be patient, thanks for looking, Doug

Heaviest piece I have EVER made

I was doing some work for a friend an saw this rusty old piece of metal sitting under a bench. Deal was stuck and I had a real cannon. Now comes the wooden part. I lot of internet time had me becoming a student of cannons throughout the centuries, but still not very smart.
I decided on making mine a Naval deck signal cannon due mainly to it’s size [it is only 29” long]. Red Oak was chosen for the mount even though the wood of choice was Elm back in those days. The vertical trim is thin strips of wood with buttons to replicate the rivets they would have used. The wheels are laminated blocks turned on my lathe with a rim cut into the side. Cannon tools are from around the shop with the brush being a small paint roller. Cannon balls are nothing more than ping pong balls 1.5” same as the bore of the cannon. The whole thing weighs in at a whopping 87.45 pounds 39.9 Kilos A fun build for sure. The last picture is one of several “all wood” cannons I have built over the years. I don’t think I ever posted any of them here.

"OLD MAN" BIKE WEEK 2018

I have been making a carving for Daytona Bike Week each year for some time now. This little guy will also qualify for my “OLD MAN” collection too. Nearly 8” tall he is carved from Russian Lipa. Painted with washed acrylics. His rings, chain and buckle are from my box of costume jewelry I pick up at yard sales. Shirt buttons are from nail art. Foam on his beer is Gorilla glue.
Had to do some R&D with that to get it right.

Harley Davidson Servi-Car

H/D made Servi-Cars from 1932 through 1973. Several engines were used during the production years. This build is a pan head 48-65, I’ll call it a 49 model after me. I scaled it 1/4:1 from internet drawings and a lot of other sources. It is approximately 19 1/2” – 20 CM long and 8” – 20 CM high. Made from at least 14 different woods all of the colors are natural. Tires excluded. The 3 woods I need to mention are the sides of the tank which is Persimmon tree root I brought back from Afghanistan, The seat, from a vintage desk leg, and the beautiful Brazilian Rosewood for the box. The leather work for the seat fringe is re-purposed from a worn out leather glove. The bright metal pieces are from my “jewelry” reserve I find at yard sales, only metal in it. The hinges for the box are not what it will have as I have new jewelry box style ordered. The springer front end did “spring” until final assembly when some CA glue migrated into the wheel. Oh, well it did work, and I never have any of my wheels turn anyway.

Wife's 2018 Christmas carving

Every year we get another Christmas themed carving for the house. This year it was done quite early. She helped with the painting. My own design, carved from Russian Lipa, acrylic pants, gel stain antique. Flowers are from a craft store, too small for my talents.

Dr. Jekyll & MR Doug

Over the period of a year I make quite a few walking sticks and canes. Every once in a great while I find that the wood tells me what to do. This was the case with this Mountain Laurel root I dug last fall. It hung half finished for months as I did not know what to do with it. Then it hit me and within a week or two it was done. Mostly power carved, this is a hard wood. Watered down acrylic paints, mixed as I went along for the effect. Semi gloss rattle can finish.

Snake Stick

I make a bunch of walking sticks and canes. This is a bit of both. Taller than a cane, maybe a short walking stick. Carved from a Mountain Lural that had a vine wrapped around it. This project forced me into PYROGRAPHY someting I have never done much of. I fun learning experience.

Plates & Pyrography

One good thing about ROUND plate pictures it is OK if they load on their side.
I had a time when I made a bunch of plates, these have sat in my shop for years, then came along pyrography and new life was brought to the old plates. I am just learning but thats all part of making sawdust.
Now they can sit for a few more years in my shop, but prettier.

My 2018 Christmas Ornaments

Every year I make some new ornaments for our tree. In fact our tree has become a tree of almost all hand made ornaments. Our kids made them and our grand kids have made some. Even though I have not seen the NEW “Grinch” movie I remember all the others. I need to make extras as they will be asked for I am sure.

Matchsticks anyone?

The matchstick cottage is complete. About 6 weeks work, at least an hour every day. It was a challenge, not so much in making it, just that MATCHSTICKS are not uniform in size. Every one had to be hand cut and they are NEVER the same thickness. In case you get the idea you would like to make one here’s the link. http://matchitecture.com/en/index.html
There are a lot of shortcuts I learned so get with me for any help you might want. This is my 2nd one. Also there are some added accents that are not with the kit.

Okeetee Corn Snake walking stick.

Just finished my OKEETEE CORN SNAKE.Carved from a twisted Mountain Lural. These are VERY colorful snakes with a wide variety of patterns and bright colors. The Red Eyed tree frog chasing a worm was a knot that I left when cleaning the tree. The snakes head was added. Carved eyes on this one as I could not find the right glass eyes. Only on LJ’s do my pictures turn sideways.

Harley Servi Car with spoke wheels

I thought that I had this project done, but I just had to change the wheels from solid wheels to laced wheels. This wheel change actually took more time than the making of the complete bike. The construction is hub laced together with the rim and the tire pressed over them. There are 15 exotic woods in this project and 72 spokes. More than one set of wheels were rejected. to read more about it go to https://www.lumberjocks.com/projects/365289

David Allan Coe

Something a bit off my normal carvings.
Love him or hate him, David Allan Coe fits both categories. DAC has lead a very colorful life to say the least. Today at 79 he still performs for the audience he loves. So many adjectives fit his personality there is no way to list them, and if you were never a biker, you’ll never understand. His music fits as many categories as available. My first meeting of DAC was decades ago through Iron Horse Billy at the world famous Iron Horse Saloon. Here’s to you DAC and IHB.

Timber Rattle Snake stick

All one piece of wood. Naturally twisted Ambrosia Maple stick that had a vine give it some twist. I just cut some more away to see the Timber Rattler climbing down the stick. 1/2 scale Prarie Dog sits on the top. Scales burnt, mostly power carved, glass eyes. SORRY, Twist your head to see the way the pictures were taken.

Patriotic Walking Stick

Patriotic theme here on this stick. The eagle is a separate piece of basswood. Braided leather handle, Tacks for stars, I tried several thins to make stars, I’ll work on them for another stick. Fractal burning along the shaft. Sorry about the sideways pictures, I took them straight. LJ’s has to fix this.

Natural bend made this stick a bit easier. 5MM handle leather wrap, Carved wizard, and fractal burning. Oh yea, the handle cap is Brazilian Rosewood. Best part is it fits me well with the little twist to the handle.

SAW MILL STICK

SAW MILL STICK

Not the prettiest stick I ever made but it carries a lot of history. The tapered top is from 60 years of work, moving the carriage back and forth on a Corley saw mill. I cut the bottom off and pinned it back together with Walnut dowels and used it for the handel, I then turned a new bottom for the stick from the same walnut, cut on the mill many years ago. I gave it to my old friend Kevin Batey, the last of the Batey sawyers that wore the handle down.

SORRY YOU STILL HAVE TO TURN YOUR HEAD TO VIEW THE PICTURES. I AM ABOUT DONE WITH POSTING HERE. YOU CAN VIEW RIGHT SIDE UP ON “WALKING STICK MAKERS”

Pumpkin time of year

AFTER OVER 10 YEARS OF POSTING TO LUMBER JOCKS, I QUIT.
No matter what camera, how I hold it, they all are turned on their side. Take a look on Caricature Carvers on FACEBOOK TO SEE THE PICTURES. I have asked the LJ people what I am doing and no answer.

Pumpkin time of year. Taking the family out for a stroll. Russian Lipa and watered down acrylics on pumpkin man. Bit of antiqueing for effect. Background pumpkin bass wood egg. scraps for the wagon. Oh yea, he’s got his CIDER barrel to get filled too.
